- “New” doesn’t mean “calibrated.” A new pipette has a factory calibration, but it’s not a guarantee of field performance.
- “Same model” doesn’t mean “same performance.” Two identical Sartorius Proline Plus pipettes can have different accuracy profiles depending on batch, age, and handling.
- “Standard calibration” is not “application-specific.” The factory default might be for water, but you’re pipetting viscous cell media. That changes everything.

The Cost of Ignoring This: More Than Just Money
That $3,200 order? That was just the direct cost. The real cost was bigger.

- Verify the calibration date. Don’t just check the box. Ask the supplier for the exact calibration report date. If it’s more than six months old, request a re-calibration before shipping.
- Confirm the calibration standard. Is it a factory standard (ISO 8655 compliant)? Or a third-party NIST-traceable calibration? Know the difference.
- Test before full deployment. Order one unit first. Run it through your standard QC protocol. If it passes, order the rest. If it doesn’t, you’ve saved yourself a $3,200 mistake.
That’s it. Three steps. We’ve used this for the past 18 months and caught four potential errors before they became real problems. One batch had a calibration report that was 14 months old. Another had a different calibration method than what our protocol required. We caught them all in time.
An informed customer asks better questions and makes faster decisions. I’d rather spend 10 minutes explaining this checklist to a new team member than deal with another mismatched order.
One More Thing: Know Your Limits
