Lab Equipment Buying FAQ: Sartorius Analytical Balance Manual, Chromatography Autosamplers, and Centrifuge Prices

I started as the office administrator in 2019, and by 2020 lab purchasing had become my unofficial second job. It’s roughly 60 to 80 orders a year with maybe eight recurring vendors. I answer to both operations and finance, so the paper trail matters as much to me as the equipment does. Most requests are straightforward. Then someone asks a question that sends me down a rabbit hole. These are the ones that came up often enough to deserve answers.

1. Where do I find the Sartorius analytical balance manual?

The fastest place is still the Sartorius download center on their website (as of January 2025, at least—sites get reorganized all the time). You can save the PDF straight to your computer. The catch is that a search for “sartorius analytical balance manual” without a model number can take you in circles, so check the sticker on the back or bottom of the unit. Cubis II, Entris II, Secura, and the older Practum lines each have separate manuals.

When someone asks me for the same manual twice, I don’t just send a link. 3. Why is a “116 multimeter” on the lab equipment request list?

That was my reaction too. A 116 multimeter is Fluke’s model number for an HVAC-focused digital multimeter. It shows up more often on a facilities request than a lab request because it measures microamps (useful for checking flame sensors) and has a built-in thermometer for heating and cooling diagnostics.

Our facilities person asked for one as a replacement, not because the lab wanted it. I’m not an electrician, so I can’t tell you whether the 116 is the right pick versus a 117 or another brand. What I can say from a purchasing perspective: people search “116 multimeter” expecting the Fluke unit, but equivalent models exist. Confirm what the requester actually needs before ordering, or you’ll be processing a return.

4. What does a centrifuge price quote really tell me?

“Centrifuge price” is a search that looks simple and isn’t. A price without specifications means surprisingly little. From quotes I’ve seen in 2024, the rough ranges were:

  • Mini personal centrifuge: roughly $500 to $1,200
  • Refrigerated benchtop microcentrifuge: roughly $4,000 to $6,500
  • Floor-model high-capacity centrifuge: $15,000 and up, depending on the rotor

Don’t hold me to those numbers—pricing shifts with exchange rates, discounts, and add-ons. The important part is what the quote includes. When I ordered my first centrifuge, I assumed the rotor came in the box. It didn’t. That mistake added a week and a separate invoice for the rotor and adapters.

Ask whether the price covers the rotor, adapters, installation, and any qualification documents. If a vendor advertises the “cheapest” centrifuge price, ask what they left out. The initial purchase price is not the total cost.

5. How to calibrate pH meter Mettler Toledo models (or most other pH meters)

When someone types “how to calibrate ph meter mettler toledo,” they’re usually after a simple checklist. I’ve done enough calibrations with our lab team to give the short version.

Rinse the electrode with distilled or deionized water, then place it in fresh pH 7.01 buffer (some meters use pH 7.00, depending on the buffer scale). Wait for the reading to stabilize, rinse again, and repeat with pH 4.01 buffer for acidic samples or pH 10.01 for alkaline samples. Most meters recognize the buffer value automatically, and the slope should fall somewhere between 95% and 105%. If it’s outside that range, clean or replace the electrode.

I’m not a metrology specialist, so I hand truly strange readings to the lab team rather than guess. But the rule that never changes: if the meter wasn’t calibrated before the measurement, don’t record the result as valid. That applies to a Mettler Toledo, a Sartorius, or any other meter on your bench.

6. What do people forget to ask before buying lab equipment?

Calibration certificates and installation support. Everyone asks about the equipment price; almost nobody asks whether the calibration certificate is included.

In 2023, I approved a refrigerated benchtop microcentrifuge purchase at what I thought was a good price. The lab supervisor then asked where the ISO/IEC 17025 calibration certificate was. I hadn’t confirmed it, the vendor hadn’t listed it, and we paid extra for a calibration visit and waited two weeks before the unit could be used. That’s when I added a small checklist to my purchase process.

Before you place an instrument order, write down the requirements: the calibration certificate and which accreditation standard applies, installation or operational qualification if your QA process needs it, and the lead time for documentation—not just the equipment lead time. It’s the least exciting part of buying a new instrument, and it’s the part that keeps everyone out of trouble.
